A Day in My Life

Summary

For this final project in film I focused on showing a realistic day of my life. I took the most time and a closer look on how much time I take sleeping and also how much time I spend at school. This was interesting towards my film because these two topic categorized in the high percentages. Afterwards, I calculated the hours I did for each activity in my day in life. This includes finding the hours and dividing them by 24 hours and then multiplying by 100 hundred in order to get a full percentage. The hours taken from each life activity helped me gauge what I needed to film and add into our film. It also helped me spend more time on areas that needed more focus like filming for my classes and then finding pictures off of openverse for a routine.

Hi I’m Adia and I record a Day in my life. Before I can even start my day I have to obviously wake up from my bed. Afterwards, I do a assortment of task such as brush my teeth, get dress and do my hair. Then I drive to school, I spend roughly 6 to 7 hours at school where I take six IB classes and spend a large majority of my time stressing over these specific classes. This also includes the transportation of walking to and from my various classes. After school on specific occasions I will have meetings and events for 2-3 hours. I spend around 33% of my day at school and  more if I have after school meetings. On this day I spent an 1 hour and 40 minutes at the NHS Induction. Afterwards I had 20-30 minutes of social/eating with my friends. This takes up about 12.5 % of my day.  To continue my productive day, I spend the next 2 hours at a BIPOC mentor leadership meeting. Where I spend a large of portion talking and communicating about. Daily actions and responsibilities such as the program takes up 20% of my day. Afterwards, I drive home, at home I spend about 40 minutes of more relaxing and making food or matcha. I normally, spend a large amount of my time doing  homework for each class around 2 -3 hours never less than 2 hours unfortunately. Today I decided to do it with one of my friends at a cafe. We look very studious, we spent around three hours there working on assortment of homework. This is goes into the school categories. We also of course do some socializing and playing around seen in the clips of videos. Afterwards, we went grocery shopping for few things this only took about 10 minutes of our time sometimes 20 minutes if we’re extremely indecisive. This takes up around 20% of my day. Afterwards, we went our separate ways and I drove back home. I normally listen to music in the car and when I get home I play music in my room and clean up a bit. If I didn’t get all my homework done then I spend the rest of evening finishing it. At this time its around 9:30 pm and 10:00 I relax and go on my phone or talk with my sister. Talking with my sister takes up a lot of my time because she is a very descriptive and dramatic person, so I have to fully pay attention or else I won’t understand the story. My brain doesn’t wind down until around 11:00 to 11:30 everyday so my bed time unfortunately is late unless I take 6mg of melatonin a hour before hand. I brush my teeth, take my jewelry out and usually stair at my ceiling until I fall asleep. The undocumented things including my routine that remain around 10 % of my day. I realized how productive my day can be if I spend it with people that can help me stay driven and motivated. In conclusion, I wan’t to also spend more time for myself and do things that help the overall health of myself as I spend so much time doing work that theres time when I become extremely drained and gloomy. Thats all, Thanks for watching my Day in the Life video!

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

I learned a lot about problem solving as a lot of the adobe platforms did not work for me so I had to improvise, ask questions and look at other platforms for the color palette and font as well as finding pictures for the video. The platforms were all relatively foreign to me therefore it took longer and more time to figure out how to use them and produce quality work to present through my video.

SESSION 5 POST-PRODUCTION – SOUND DESIGNER’S JOURNAL

Summary

Throughout the post production of session five I communicated quite often with the group on how we should go about setting up the slideshow for the Advisory committee and for the teacher to visually see the work and effort put into our film. I missed a few post-production work days due to a BIPOC Stay woke conference and my role as a secretary for the Black Student Union I have to miss class periods to take up important conversations and task. However, during the weekend and free time in other classes or out of school the post-production task were completed and done before the designated due date. Overall, the post-production of our film was extremely eventful as I took the time to talk with the team on some of the positive and negative points and issues our team had along the road of producing and completing the film.

Sound Design Effectiveness

Artistically: The atmospheric conversations added to the overall film because it portrayed a realistic High School atmosphere and created a sound difference when the film would switch to normal filming to each character speaking in a separate room for there interviews. Additionally, I added in various types of music and foley sounds that artistically worked well with the movement of the film. The music and foley sounds also do a good job a building the plot of the film.

Technically: The music and lack of the foley sounds serve somewhat of a problem. The music in various sections of the film displayed a louder tone and pitched a little higher so it caused the music to be distracting and drew away from the plot and the character because the music was the unfortunate center-piece. There was also lacks of foley sounds in some various places that I felt I could of adding more chair squeaking or other foley sounds to represent the emotions presented in each character.

Working With The Editor

During the pre and post production the communication and collaboration was what tied the overall film together. I worked and spent the majority of my time with the editor and director piecing together the final touches of the film such as simple foley sound additions or changing small details of music that were added to the film. The communication was key because Lily and I talked on the phone about the decision of foley sounds being excluded from the film and also helped each other choose music for the characters. As a team, we worked all efficiently on communicating with a transparent and honest attitude because we were working towards the same goal of creating a different and attention grabbing film. The majority of the time was spent with Sophia creating music in the sound room and using our time diligently. I needed the most help with the foley sounds, so lily and I worked towards writing down notes and ideas on a sheet of paper but ended up scrapping it because we altered the audio. The process of messing up on the audio was what made working with the editor better because I was given straightforward feedback.

How I Could Have Improved The Film

introduced the movie with a problem. Instead of Me and Merja starting off on the film switch to a scene or introduction of Lily with dialogue that introduces the problems through the scope of Lily ( since she is trying to find a seat) Also, if we added more layers for instance in Mere rat part section we could of deepen the film.

What I Learned

For researching I found the most inspiration looking at movies over the weekend and youtube videos, for one of the main inspirations as Mean Girls and Perks of, a Wallflower both set through a teens perspective and a High School atmosphere. Through watching both of those films I took mental notes on the sound employed through comedic or dramatic scenes and what I found the most interesting was how music was used to tell a story of a meaning significantly. I took that same inspiration through the music portion where I added music to the start and ending of the film. For other sources, I used multiple articles to research sound designer roles and the articles provided additional director comments and comments from the audience on their perspective of the films. The Media as well provided additional comments on what needed to be fixed or what worked towards the sound portions of the film. This helped when I made the music because I used the comments as guidance for my own work.

During the pre and post production the communication and collaboration was what tied the overall film together. I worked and spent the majority of my time with the editor and director piecing together the final touches of the film such as simple foley sound additions or changing small details of music that were added to the film. Without the large amounts of communication on what sounds we should use and add to the film or if ADR should be required I think our film would have taken extensively longer to make and produce on time without any difficulties. As a team, we worked all efficiently on communicating with a transparent and honest attitude because we were working towards the same goal of creating a different and attention grabbing film. The majority of the time was spent with Sophia creating music in the sound room and using our time diligently.

PRE-PRODUCTION – INQUIRY

Leader(s) in the Field / Exemplary Work()

Steven Spielberg

The sound effect throughout Steve Spielberg’s War of the Worlds movie helped me advance my understanding of the usage of sound effects although the video doesn’t explain Spielbergs own perspective as there is no dialogue so I used the source as an example of sound effects that I though are needed for our overall film. Steven Spielberg has been an inspirational and important figure in the film industry working towards creating ambiguous films. ” Building a bed of constant noisy city ambience, then singling out and stringing together…key noises.” The sounds that tell the story include the sound of the assassin’s car as it arrives, and then the dialogue of the man’s daughter and wife as they leave, followed by the signal that it’s safe to proceed. I found Spielberg as large leader in my work because he employs various types of sound technique in various types of his films he doesn’t stay consistent which I found interesting and adaptive way to broaden your aspect in film. Specifically, being a beginner I found Spielbergs works easy to follow and understand his way of thinking and working.

Stephen Chbosky

Perks of a Wallflower employs realistic High School atmosphere. The interviews from various types of people reveal how Chbosky understand the relevance and society of High School Although, there some sections of the film that re dated the internal perspective given through the Main character Charlie is shown through the usage of sound and direction of the cameras.

https://www.afterglowatx.com/blog/2021/2/24/media-and-music-the-pensive-sounds-of-the-perks-of-being-a-wallflower

The article above explains Chbosky sound usage and his directions towards using passive sound usage, the article ” Media and Music: The Pensive Sounds of ” The perks of being wallflower” “Dear friend, this is Charlie’s life and the music that accompanies him as he grows and blooms. Emotional ballads and dance anthems — those are just a couple of its perks” ( Taylor). Chbosky usage of actual music helps reveal the emotions of each character and I found a great deal of inspiration from using songs that have double meaning to align with the characters personality and also driving the plot of the story. Taylor quotes ” Drowning in desperation, the freshman reads alone in his dimly lit room, listening to The Smiths’ “Asleep,” a dark lullaby that sums up his own melancholy and becomes his favorite song” I found that little song usages helps the audience understand Charlie and like him more and when making the sound I wanted to create music that was more comedic but showed the characters personality.

Training Source(s)

Sound effects editing, the importance of sound is seen through the shapes of the scene and how sound employs various types of emotions such as fear, grief, sadness and shock. Therefore without sound the scene would ethier employ anxiety from the sound of silence or not give a direct meaning. Ambiguity through sound is what I focused on throughout my film as the sound needed to be realistic and relapse into the real world such as the High School atmosphere. Paul E.T video on the ” The Power of Sound in Movies” quotes dialogue is something that you really want to capture on set the magic caught in the moment during a performance can seldom be recreated inside a recording booth” The importance of the quote which really reflected on my learning was his explanation on how ADR can either decrease the quality of the film or increase or the quality of the film. Pual E.T video was extremely simplistic and I wish in the past I would’ve watched his videos just starting the sound designer production in order to grasp a better perspective of the importance of clean and simple sounds using ADR or foley sounds.

Nope techniques employs various types of ambiguous – Terror instead of Horror. Jordan Peele’s one of my favorite movie directors reveals how important sound is through evoking emotion and grow the climax of the film. ” Horror, by contrast, is what we’d have if the story allowed the door to be open before the final wish could be made” Peele holds back the horror the scene instead allowing our imagination to do the work insiparing terror.

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

During pre- production I strived the most to be a critical thinker specifically when creating music that matched the overall theme and content of the film. Our film did not take long to produce and go over so this allowed the team ( Lily and Merja) to research and create a good song that fit with the movements and plot of the film. I utilize critical thinking skills when researching specifically on the quiet place, I used this film because one the directors focused on atmospheric sounds to enhance the overall placement of the film. Also, the usage of the music was what took a significant amount of my critical thinking because I was in charge of creating music that correlating with each of the characters personality. This task itself was difficult because creating music for five characters takes time and extreme effort to match and understand the role of the characters. I did have help during this process and with Critcial thinking and collaboration with Sophia I was able to create multiple music pieces that matched fit well with the overall production of the film.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

During the pre and post production the communication and collaboration was what tied the overall film together. I worked and spent the majority of my time with the editor and director piecing together the final touches of the film such as simple foley sound additions or changing small details of music that added to the film. Without the large amounts of communication on what sounds we should use and add to the film or if ADR should be required I think our film would of taking extensively longer to make and produce on time without any difficulties. As a team, we worked all efficiently on communicated with a transparent and honest attitude because we were working towards the same goal of creating a different and attention grabbing film. The majority of the time was spent with sophia creating music in the sound room and using our time diligently.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

For researching I found the most inspiration looking a movies over the weekend and youtube videos, for one of the main inspiration as Mean Girls and Perks of, a Wallflower both set through a teens perspective and a High School atmosphere. Through watching both of those film I took mental notes on the sound employ through comedic or dramatic scenes and what I found the most interesting was how music was used to tell a story of a meaning significantly. This helped when I made the music because I used the comments as guidance for own my work.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

During the production of our film, some examples of me personally developing were enhancing my ability to understand garage-band better because I was using multiple outlets to produce the music. One being my mobile device and also the computers gave. This allowed me to look through the garage band more frequently because I had it on hand and I also could figure out how to use the garage band correctly with the help of my other team members. Due to using garage band so often we figured out more hacks and tricks to enhance our music ( looping, reverb, pitch, sound effects various music samples) to make our music sound more realistic to a film. I also developed in problem-solving because our team had so many boundaries during this project that we had to figure out a solution quickly or else we wouldn’t have had a film to present. ( Of this was before we knew Mr. Mcnabb had covid)

Reactions to the Final Version

Overall, I thought that our film turned out well regardless of the other issues we had. I think overall the camera movements by Sophie ( our cinematographer) were well done and made our overall film look like more of a tv show which hopefully made the audience more intrigued. From the perspective of the viewers I think our group accomplished a lot in a short amount of time given that we had other work and job going on during that time.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

Simple: Choosing the songs we wanted for our film and adapting each song for a specific part in the film

Unexpected: The Trials of making the songs and adding them into the video as wells as microphone issues and ADR issues.

Concrete: Lily’s ( editor) and Merja ( Directors) work ethics towards getting the film done and completed with quality work.

Emotional: The overall production was intense on our schedules as we were IB Testing during during this week and that created some intense feelings but overall everything worked out.

Session 5 Production- Sound Designer Journal

Summary

This production session was major success and extremely eventful towards my sound designer goals. I was able to create three out of four of the cinematic storytelling elements incorporated into our film. Additionally, I collaborated with the cinematographer to compose various types of music sequences for our film. The music played a significant role in our film because it was used as a source of correlation for each character. Our director, decided to exclude larger and more apparent foley sounds because it would cause a distraction and mess up the quality of the film.

Captured Sound

walking noises

The walking noises were excluded from the final film however, before hand it was going to be used as a transitional sound to show the pacing in the film and to demonstrate the movement in the film. Specifically, seen through a camera shot of a character walking and the audio following.

Drinking noises

The drinking noise was also exlcuded from the final film because

Sound Choices

Chair and atmospheric noises: The chairs helps also establish a classroom setting and also add to the awkarwd and intense scenes we have with the characters

Classroom noises: The classroom noises establishes the setting and helps adds to the additional meaning of each scene. For example switching from interviews and present day can be confusing but the background noises help show whats present or past in each section or for different characters.

Footsteps: The footstep were later not used in the film however, it also help establish quickining of the pace and making sure the scenes I did this by walking outside and other places with a lot of people to get faint walking noises.

Beeping noises (Diegetic) The beeping noises was created in Garagaband and helped create a more tv show film because it used normally a lot in various types of TV Shows.

Composition Consideration

Classroom sounds/ Hallway sounds ( open-room sounds): With the help of the director and cinematographer I worked together to gather High-school or classroom sounds. The room tone adds to the atmosphere of the film because, it’s establishes the setting and placing of each scene. ( We alternate a lot from interviews to current day or previous day. Our director also wanted to miminalize the foley sounds because it was supposed to be as generic and reality tv show as possible therefore the foley sound would change the feeling and over perception of the film.

What I Learned and Problems I Solve

Throughout this production the most major factor is to do the sound and other components such as music with time and make sure the quality is worth showing for viewers. A large portion of my sound did not turn out how I wanted it to be produced therefore, when it came showing the final piece I disliked a large portion of my sections ( this was not on the editor). However, what I liked and problem solved was the lack of music we originally had starting the film off, before it was extremely silent, with zero music and the director and I disliked how it didn’t show or realistically portray a ” reality tv show” therefore the music was added for a better effect. The music however, was also a little loud and in some parts not needed.I If given the option to change or alter anything after the last final touches I would get rid of some of the music and add in more effective foley sounds for a better comedic and dramatic effect.

SUMMARY

Sound Design Process

Through the sound design process my responsibilities varied depending on who I was working with. Through the pre-production process working with the director is crucial towards well developed and mature sound pieces. The maximum amount of time was spent working with the director and how the usage of specific foley sounds depending on the sequence of the film helps add depth and intention to the characters and driving the plot towards a riveting story. Before communicating with the director or other roles part of our team I did my own personal and developmental research on the role of sound specifically correlating to the genre of the film. The prioritization was finding enough resources to drive my creative process specifically when the film might need atmospheric sounds or non-diegetic or diegetic sounds. The research I did allowed for more organization and planned out performance to occur therefore when forming the pieces of the film together it ran smoothly without complications or major collisions to occur. Without the simple researching steps taken, the pre-production process could of been potentially been extremely faulty and time consuming.

Sound Design Element

  • (1) Foley Sounds ( Diegetic)I
  • From Mean Girls ( 2004)
    • The bell ringing in the introduction of the school
    • School classroom noises Examples: chairs creaking, background conversations, car noises.
    • Realistic sound
    • add foley sounds that add to the various characters part of the film
    • Additionally work with Director on specific sound resources used to encapsulate the film genre.
  • (2) Atmospheric sounds
  • Conversations
  • teachers talking
  • school atmosphere
  • cafeteria sounds
  • ( 3) Surreal Sound ( Meta- Diegetic)
  • realisms through people ( human things)
  • Eating
  • Talking
  • Running
  • Establish a teen atmosphere through the foley sounds
  • ( 4) Expressive Sounds ( Dietetic) ( Outer world)
  • Screaming and shouting
  • Arguing
  • Girls fighting specifically

Test Recording

Test Clip: ” Oh My God”

I needed one voice that could evoke the ” valley girl” voice for an example of what I wanted the dialogue and script to sound like for the director. I was able to get a student that evoked a good voice and I could use her voice later to elaborate to the actors on what I wanted to get accomplished through voice and tone.

Fake Noise

Test Clip: Hallway Atmospheric sounds/ Voices

Hallway Noises

The idea behind using the atmospheric sounds was originally to fill space and time for some clips because it was silent therefore we needed sound to accompany the awkwardness of the scene. The testing clips displayed below show some examples of sounds we took from inside of the school. In this case the hallways and

Mere Test Scream

The ” Mere Test Scream” was used as the source of planning, I wanted to incorporate screaming however the problems with screaming is that the audio can become cracked and bad. So we did a test run of mere Screaming something random. I ended up not liking how it sounded and left the scream for the director to look over. My Intentions was to show how the audio can change when an intense scene comes in.

Discussions with Director

(The stars establish the foley sounds I will be using) I work the director who drew the diagram in order to gauge what needed to get done through specific scene. The justification through this picture is that it allows me to understand what foley sounds are the necessity for each clip. I can also help focus on what needs to get done each done and count day what foley sounds are not needed or required.

Influences from Films

Mean girls Cafeteria Scene Mean Girls ( 2004)

The scene itself ties together all sound aspects I want to focus on throughout my film. The foley sounds of background noises such as conversations and loud talking. As well as voice overs from different narrators I found the speech and talking in the film interesting because it drives the whole plot and is funny. The music incorporated in the film also helps establish the setting specifically when see various characters in different states of their life. By doing this the music carries a lot of the scene to come of comedic or serious and helps the overall film pull the audience in more.

Brian Ronan’s

Through my research in different films for inspiration I scanned mostly the iconic film Mean Girls ( 2004) Brian Ronan the sound designer of the film made multiple intentional decision that help tie together the comedy of the role and display a message through each of characters. He’s a director for a play however I liked to look at his play sound theory to understand how reasltic sound helps enhance the atmopshere of the film. For example sound that needs to be coherent and crisp in order for the audience to understand it.

when your protagonist has no name By: CinemaStix

The movie used for this film inspired a lot of the sounds I want to characterized in future films and the current film our team is developing. I liked the idea of intentionally obscuring dialogue in film because it adds depth to want you want the audience to understand and perceive. Tenet ( 2020) audio is purposefully loud and the dialogue is cut sometimes to help strengthen the motives of the scene specifically through loud gun shots, crashing noises or the music. Looking at different films ways of sound designing helps create more ideas for what I want in my film when producing foley sounds or helping with the music.

when the filmmakers respect the communities they’re depicting By: CinemaStix

CinemaStix was one of my main resources when learning the basic of sound designer. Being through the role in multiple session I enjoy learning and taking notes on CinemaStix ideas and thoughts about the production of sound. Specifically, I liked how he respects all aspects of filmmaking. The film The sound of Metal ( 2019) helps establish a new way at looking at sound specifically because it shot and portrayed through the protagonist loosing his hearing. In this way the film make sure to highlight the importance of sound in film because the film starts off loud and slowly go’s through a stage of quietness.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

The initial problems our team had at the start of pre-production was creating the film itself not only was this a long and extensive task because we had to follow a restricted idea but we also had similar films that followed the same idea therefore we felt we were repeating similar film ideas. This put us in a bad position because we couldn’t find ideas that related to the topic without it being a repetition of previous film. After time thinking and going over ideas we decided to start with the foley sound of Capital High School and make the film the realities of High School.

My problems as a sound designer was what I wanted to spend most of my time focusing on. For example foley sound takes a lot of time and effort because you have to individually figure out how these sound help establish the plot of the film it can’t just be random noises. Therefore, I talked with the director a lot of the time to see what her in put was on where and what the foley sounds are supposed to be and how it adds to the film.
